Note: This experience is extremely popular and should be secured well in advance.

"Hoerikwaggo" is actually a Khoi'san word meaning "mountain in the sea", which is what the Khoi'san people used to commonly refer to as Table Mountain. The Hoerikwaggo Trail is a spectacular five day or seven day 100km hiking package trail from Cape Town to Cape Point. Alternatively hikers can book packages ranging from one day to four day hikes as sections of the overall trail. There are various combinations of this hike, but spending at least one night in an overnight camp is recommended. Technically this hike enables you to walk from Table Mountain cable station to Cape Point, making it similar to the Inca Trail in Machu Picchu.

The Hoerikwaggo Trail is rich in the history of the past 100 000 years from of pre-Settler days when the Khoekhoen and San traversed the mountains and beaches, first hunting and gathering, then herding in a subsistence lifestyle that touched the earth lightly, to the arrival of the Nguni settlers 3 000 years ago, then the European settlers more than 300 years ago. The magnificent steep-sided mountain chain has remained undeveloped above the growing urban sprawl of Cape Town at its flanks – making the Hoerikwaggo Trail and Table Mountain areas perfect for an adventurous and nature-filled hike!

This trail reveals the true spirit of our sea mountain. In the past, hikers have not been able to experience this. Recently however this experience was made possible, by allowing access for hiking from Table Mountain to Cape Point, through the Table Mountain National Park (TMNP). This hike caters for both local and international clients, who like to experience the incredible beauty of the Capes best asset without having to sacrifice comfort (this is not camping in the bush. We stay in permanently erected luxury tents, complete with beds, solar powered lighting and nice hot showers).

Along your Hoerikwaggo Trail journey you will be staying at Table Mountain Accommodation, which has been specifically and exclusively built for this trail, these accommodation camps are: Orange Kloof (Hout Bay), Silvermine (below Noordhoek Peak) and Slangkop Point, near the Kommetjie Lighthouse, the old forestry station above Smitswinkel Bay near the entrance to the Park's Cape Point section and at the SA Navy's former Signal School above Simons Town.

Tented Camps

The beautiful, rustic and luxurious camps are built from timber felled and milled in the Table Mountain National Park. Following the principle of touching the earth lightly, only previously damaged sites were selected, and the design ensures minimum environmental impact. Hot water, open fires, and fully equipped kitchens are available. Hikers are to provide their own bedding and towels. Sleeping bags can be rented by prior arrangement.

Catering can be arranged, which will include the following:

  • Continental breakfast
  • Packed lunch
  • Real South African braai (barbeque) for dinner
  • Alcoholic beverages can also be arranged if requested.
