WEST COAST TOUR
(FREE rustic seafood lunch on the beach )Full Day Tour
The Cape West Coast reaches from Blouberg and Strand to the border of Namibia. It is a truly unique region of Southern Africa as a result of the fact that the region is unspoilt and largely undeveloped. The atmosphere in this region is very quaint and primitive. Many of the inhabitants make their living from the sea, the result being that many little fishing villages still exist.
It is not uncommon to arrive on a West Coast beach without encountering any other people. There is a warm hospitality wherever you visit and people are known to always greet and to have a great sense of humour.
Our tour starts in the Cape Town CBD, and we head north on the R27(commonly known as the West Coast Road) through Milnerton, the greater Blouberg area and Melkbosstrand. About 2km after melkbosstrand, you will see the famous Koeberg Nuclear Power Station on your left hand side. We continue north and you will note that the vegetation is mostly fynbos and the landscape is quite flat.
A few km north we stop off at Khwa Ttu, where we spend some time learning about the local San (commonly known as bushmen)
From here we continue north until we reach the West Coast National Park. Situated just inland from the secluded Harbour of Saldanha Bay, one finds the azure waters of the Langebaan Lagoon, focal point of the West Coast National Park.
Thousands of seabirds roost on sheltered islands, pristine white sandy beaches stretch endlessly into the early morning mist and brooding salt marshes are home to vast concentrations of migrant waders from the northern hemisphere.
We visit Eves Footprint (a set of fossilized footprints discovered on the shore of the Langebaan Lagoon in 1995) and the beautiful unspoilt village of Churchaven. You will have the opportunity to spot game as many mammals are found throughout the reserve. Eland, Red Hartebeest, Cape Grysbok, Caracal and Rock Hyrax are some of the terrestrial species to search for. During the right season one should also keep an eye on the Atlantic ocean for passing whales and dolphins.
One of the most charming meals that one can enjoy when visiting the Cape can be found, on the beach, up the West Coast at the Strandloper – an open air, totally casual restaurant on the beach, sand under foot, blue sky above and fish and other goodies on the open barbeque (braai) as well as homemade plaasbrood and roosterkoek (bread), a large range of fish, from mussels to crayfish. This is an unforgettable eating experience! There is also an amazing rustic beach bar.
The atmosphere at the Strandloper is magical – closer than this to nature one can not get. And there is absolutely nothing commercial about it – not even cutlery (mussel shells have to do).
TASTE SOUTH AFRICA'S (WEST COAST) UNIQUE COUSINE:
Bokkoms –Dried salty small fish , Snoek – type of local fish, Waaterblommetjiebredie – made from local waaterblometjies(flower), Kreef –crayfish, Wit Stompneus –type of local fish, Roosterkoek / Potbread – local type of bread fresh from the oven, Waaterlemoenkonfyt – watermelon jam, Harders – small local fish, Engelvis – angelfish, Moskonfyt – local jam, mossels – local mussels, moer coffee – a local type of coffee...... YUM!!
SEASONAL FLOWER TOUR (AUGUST-OCTOBER)
The West Coast has limited rainfall, however depending on whether patterns, the region normally has some rainfall towards end of July /beginning of August. When the sun makes its appearance, magic happens. Most of the area is covered in a carpet of indigenous flowers in incredible colours.
Please enquire should you wish to experience the magic.
