The Cape West Coast reaches from Blouberg and Strand to the border of Namibia. It is a truly unique region of Southern Africa as a result of the fact that the region is unspoilt and largely undeveloped. The atmosphere in this region is very quaint and primitive. Many of the inhabitants make their living from the sea, the result being that many little fishing villages still exist. It is not uncommon to arrive on a West Coast beach without encountering any other people. There is a warm hospitality wherever you visit and people are known to always greet and to have a great sense of humour.

Our tour starts in the Cape Town CBD, and we head north through Milnerton, the greater Blouberg area. We stop for an opportunity to get a post card photo of Table Mountain across the bay. We continue north and you will note that the vegetation is mostly sparse coastal fynbos and the landscape is quite flat. A few km north we stop off at Khwa Ttu, where we spend some time learning about the local San (commonly known as bushmen).

From here we continue north until we reach the West Coast National Park. Situated just inland from the secluded Harbour of Saldanha Bay, one finds the azure waters of the Langebaan Lagoon, focal point of the West Coast National Park. Thousands of seabirds roost on sheltered islands, pristine white sandy beaches stretch endlessly into the early morning mist and brooding salt marshes are home to vast concentrations of migrant waders from the northern hemisphere. This area is fantastic for avid bird watchers.

You will have the opportunity to spot game as many mammals are found throughout the reserve. Eland, Red Hartebeest, Cape Grysbok, Ostrich, Caracal and Rock Hyrax are some of the terrestrial species to search for. During the right season one should also keep an eye on the Atlantic ocean for passing whales and dolphins. After lunch we visit the West Coast Fossil Park. See the fossils of bears, sabre-tooth cats, short-necked giraffes and the many other exotic animals which inhabited the west coast area some 5 million years ago.

WEST COAST FLOWER TOUR (August & September only)

There is a magical time along the pristine West Coast when every coastal town and inland village, mountains and fields are ablaze as an endless, kaleidoscope of wild flowers burst, almost simultaneously, into full bloom. The natural phenomenon of flower season along the Cape West Coast in the Western Cape draws thousands of visitors between August and September each year; but, the wild flowers have been known to bloom as early as July and as late as October, depending on weather conditions. After the rains and when the sun makes its appearance , magic happens! To experience the most remarkable displays of the season we visit Postberg Nature Reserve within the West Coast National Park, where 80 species of flowering plants are endemic to the region and found nowhere else in the world.

One of the most charming meals that one can enjoy when visiting the Cape can be found, on the beach, up the West Coast – an open air, totally casual restaurant on the beach, sand under foot, blue sky above and fish and other goodies on the open barbeque (braai) as well as homemade plaasbrood and roosterkoek (bread), a large range of fish, from mussels to crayfish. This is an unforgettable eating experience! There is also an amazing rustic beach bar.

The atmosphere is magical – closer than this to nature one can not get. And there is absolutely nothing commercial about it – not even cutlery (mussel shells have to do).

Bokkoms –Dried salty small fish , Snoek – type of local fish, Waaterblommetjiebredie – made from local waaterblometjies(flower), Kreef –crayfish, Wit Stompneus –type of local fish, Roosterkoek / Potbread – local type of bread fresh from the oven, Waaterlemoenkonfyt – watermelon jam, Harders – small local fish, Engelvis – angelfish, Moskonfyt – local jam, mossels – local mussels, moer coffee – a local type of coffee...... YUM!!

Note: This tour is weather dependent.
